October Editorial: We move on Forward

Attend Homecoming 2010

Attend Homecoming 2010

It’s already October! Time flies, and for many of our current learners it means their Matric exam finals are almost here… We wish every Grade 12 learner luck in their exams and hope for great results early next year. For a number of our alumni, their year-end final exams are also nearing and we wish them, too, the very best in their endeavours. This October is especially interesting as the Tsogo Alumni Society hosts their first Alumni Homecoming, which is the focus of this editorial.

Homecoming 2010

Alumni Homecoming 2010 is  an event for alumni to get back together, network, work and simultaneously express their support by giving back to Tsogo. Our theme for 2010 is School Renovation, but we envision a much broader scope for the Homecoming event in future. Some ideas that have been listed are:

  • Cleaning / renovating our school premises
  • Fundraisers
  • Sports
  • Cultural events
  • Assisting Mmakau & neighbouring communities

Alumni Event: Alumni Homecoming (9 October 2010)

[simage=87,200,c,right,]The Tsogo Alumni Society introduces the first ‘Alumni Homecoming’ as an annual event that hopes to bring together alumni and start a tradition of getting together each year for an eventful day that starts with a general meeting and then proceeds to various activities. For 2010 – the Alumni Society felt it appropriate to start with a SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECT given the poor state of Tsogo’s classrooms, offices and overall infrastructure. We are currently raising funds, sourcing donations for office equipment, desks & chairs, sourcing building material donations and skills for the Homecoming Day – we hope you’ll be able to assist with your financial donation or in any way possible (esp. painting & renovation skills) !

Saturday, 9th October 2010: HOMECOMING Day – Programme

The day will begin with an Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will allow your Executive Committee to report-back on the activities and state of the society over the past year and present a strategy for the coming one. It is hoped that the AGM will also enable alumni and those attending to render suggestions to the committee and also stand for nomination / election to the executive committee.

2010 Theme: “Facelift for Tsogo”

  • 08h00 Welcoming and registration
  • 08h15 Annual General Meeting (Mmashiko Hall, Mmakau)
  • 09h30 Break & refreshments
  • 09h45 2010 Homecoming Activity: School revival work (Painting & Repairs)
  • 12h45 Lunch, refreshments & networking
  • 13h30 School revival work continues… (Painting & Repairs)
  • 16h00 Closing and departure

If we have not completed the work we will continue on Saturday, 16th October 2010

Main Tasks for Saturday 9 October

  • School signage (Erecting new school signage donated by the Alumni Society in 3 key intersections and 1 in front of the school)
  • Computer donations and IT upgrades (Checking, fixing and upgrading old computers, printers & fax machines (incl. software installations) The IT task will involve getting alumni in the IT field to have a look at some donated computers / equipment and figure out how they can be fixed / upgraded. The idea is then to get either the admin block / teachers to use them… or if they are too antiquated, then we may donate them to Mmashiko or a school nearby (even the primary schools) for their office blocks to use. It’ll be great if we can just get the computers to work as basic word processors for teachers / learners to start using.
  • Classroom Renovations (Sourcing & Replacing Window Stays & Handles)(Replacing Classroom & Cupboard doors and handles) (Fixing broken classroom desksand charis), Replacing/Fixing notice boards, Replacing emergency signage, Repainting classrooms when needed)
  • Office & Classroom Renovations (Source and/or Fix School Furniture)

We are still sourcing some material for the classroom renovations – so we need donations from alumni and/ or material sponsorships. So if you can assist (especially with material) with any of the above please inform us using the contact details below.During the week we will try and update you with what is still outstanding and if you can donate we encourage you to do. As you can see please bring old clothes to work in for the day.

The Alumni Wiki – We need you to make it work

Tsogo Alumni Wiki

Tsogo Alumni Wiki

We have been building up the Alumni Wiki the last few months. So we thought we should actually have a proper introduction to it. We wish for the Wiki to be a section where alumni can collaborate in information gathering and sharing.  For example, we have a number of alumni who send out a lot of bursary and scholarship information. We try to collect all of this information and put it 1 place. In the past we used to put this information on the Learner Page, now we are moving it to the Wiki so that it can easily be updated and changed if need be. Alumni will still be able to send the emails and the Directory Team as well as other Alumni will be able to update the Wiki pages easily. We aim to add another dimension to all the work we and the Alumni Society has done in allowing online collaboration and also encouraging alumni to communicate with each other across generations and location. 2010 Alumni Survery Insights

Alumni Survey Insights

Your Responses

We would like to thank everyone who has participated in the survey. The insight from the survey was also compared to all the data we have gathered since the beginning. One interesting thing is that a good number of our alumni want to receive messages through email. To this end we have slowly been increasing our email group. We will soon reach 400 alumni on the email group. We encourage anyone who would want to suggest the Alumni Directory and Society to anyone, point them to the Website http://www.tsogo.vima.co.za . More importantly if you would like to receive better updates in the future fill in the form at http://tsogo.vima.co.za/social-networking/contact-update-form if you have not already. (more…)

Become a Tsogo Class Ambassador (July Alumni Society Update)

Volunteer, be the One

Anyone who matriculated at Tsogo High School between 1978 & 2009 and is willing to link up with old friends can volunteer to become a Class Ambassador (CA) …. (as long you remain committed to act as a liaison between the school / society and your old class mates!)

Click here to download more information

Tsogo Class Ambassadors are those individuals who volunteer to act as the liaison between the school/the alumni society and the individual’s own past matric class mates. Class Ambassadors (CAs) will be required to find, collect information/data and maintain regular contact with individuals from his/her matric year. CAs will in turn communicate vital information, requests and updates from the Tsogo Alumni Society and the school to their old class mates. CAs may also organise or assist in organising 5 year, 10 year, 15 year, etc. ‘class reunions’ as desired by members of that class year. (more…)

Careers & Study Expo

Tsogo Secondary School – Mmakau Village

Tsogo Alumni 4th Annual Careers & Study Expo
Thursday 25th March 2010

Report By Thabo Ncalo

The first quarter in 2010 has been a productive one for the alumni society. We’re glad to report that our 4th Annual Expo was a great success! This year we managed to host  7 academic institutions and  12 companies / organisations and exposed all Tsogo Grade 9 to 12 learners (approximately 400 learners) to a range of careers and study fields.

In true Tsogo tradition the event opened with some melodic singing and prayer at assembly followed by a welcome address from Mr. Assi (school principal) . He welcomed all guests and alumni  – and especially Mr. Thema  who is the Circuit Manager (Bojanala Region) in the Department of Education.

The welcome address was followed by  a brief address by Mr. Thabo Ncalo (Alumni society secretary) who spoke about the role of alumni at Tsogo and the importance of instilling a culture of giving-back. He urged the learners to “be inquisitive” and ask many questions as possible – both on the day and generally in life. (more…)

Young Achiever Profile: Tshepo Maubane (Tsogo 2009)

Tshepo Maubane - Tsogo 2009

Tshepo Maubane - Tsogo 2009

“OUTSTANDING!

The Pretoria News carried a story with the headline “Prime moment for a high achiever” on January 8th 2010 following the 2009 Matric Results’ release. It was about a matric learner from Ga-Rankuwa who obtained 8 distinctions in the matric exams last year. This high achiver is a young man known by everyone at Tsogo as Tshepo Maubane.

We celebrate Tsogo’s 35 years of excellence by bringing you  our conversations with two outstanding Class of 2009 matriculants. Our second honoured new alumna Ms. Lesego Phateng obtained 7 distinctions in 2009 and is one of the most inspiring and focused young women from our community.

Alumni Society Secretary Mr. Thabo Ncalo caught up with Mr. Maubane on campus in Hatfield, Pretoria and Ms. Phateng at her new Student Centre at University of Jhb. (RAU)  to find out how they achieved their amazing results and where they see themselves in the years to come. (more…)
